Long ago, Patreon revolutionized how independent artists make a living. But many of us are still struggling. And for some, the reason isn't the quality of their work. Instead, it's applying a bad Patreon strategy — and suffering the consequences.

Here are some of the most common Patreon mistakes — errors costing you money! After that, we'll discuss some better strategies. And finally, I'll talk about changing your existing Patreon tiers.

'Support me on Patreon!'

First and foremost: STOP SAYING 'SUPPORT ME ON PATREON!' I've covered this in-depth in previous posts. You must understand this concept.

People want things for their money

This is closely related to the "Support Me" problem. When artists talk about Patreon on their Patreon page or social media, they make the mistake of discussing what's in it for themselves. They'll talk about how Patreon revenue could mean they can afford a new computer. Or they'll discuss how they could quit their day job at a certain level.

But your prospective backers are just like you. They work hard for their money, and if they're going to spend it, they want to know what's in it for them — not what's in it for you!

Instead of talking about what the Patreon money means to you, you should be laser-focused on describing the rewards that your backers could receive if they join you on Patreon!
