One of my oldest axioms is that "social media is social." In other words, social media rewards participation. Substack's "Recommendations" feature is a surprisingly powerful promotional tool, and if you're like most of us, you're missing out on its full potential by refusing to participate.

Substack will prompt you to pose a Recommendation as you interact with other Substack accounts. This can be as simple as adding them to your list of Recommendations with a simple click of a button. Or you can go a step further by writing a short "blurb" explaining why you recommend this account.

Many of us click the Recommend button, but few of us take the time to write a blurb, and that's a mistake. It takes very little time, and it increases the likelihood that the person will add your blurb to their Welcome page. When/if they do, it appears at the bottom of their Welcome page, with a link back to your Substack home page. Furthermore, you'll be building your network of professional contacts as those people you've written friendly blurbs about will be very amenable to reciprocating. It's a virtuous circle.
