Cartoonists continue migrating to Substack to use its audience-building potential, and they struggle with the same question: What should I write in my newsletter? To make this easier, I've delineated three basic types of newsletter posts — each with its role in generating new readers for your comic.

Three types of newsletter post

Three basic types of posts work well on newsletters:

  • Comic — posting your comic and sending it out to subscribers

  • News — what's going on in your world as a comic creator

  • Promotion — what are you doing that you want your readers to get involved with

Let's examine each more closely, starting with the one many people do incorrectly.
