Webcomics Confidential: Changing how we talk about education

We're raising a generation of "go-getters" ... and that's not good

I've been teaching at the university level since 2014, and I've noticed something alarming. We've been giving young people the wrong idea about education — worse yet, it's something I'd been doing with my own children!

"Go get your degree so you can get a job"

We tell young people to "go get their degree so they can have the job they want." It's a perfectly reasonable statement, right? And on the surface, it makes perfect sense. But having taught at two different universities — Hussian College School of Art and University of the Arts — I started noticing something disturbing.

If I assigned an essay to be written at a minimum of three pages, I could count on everyone handing in papers that were exactly three pages. It would be the stand-out student, indeed, who would submit an essay of four pages. Five pages? Unheard of.
